  105. This is a comprehensive alphabetic listing of Internet sites accepting
  106. Anonymous FTP. To find out what Anonymous FTP is and how to use it, read
  107. the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) List, distributed separately.

  109. Site   : site address (no IP numbers, they change too frequently)
  110. Country: country where site is located
  111. GMT    : hours from GMT (+/-)
  112. Date   : date of last modification for site
  113. Source : last updater of entry or source of information
  114. Alias  : any listed aliases (machinenames or 'netnames', the nicknames
  115.          by which they are known to the people most using them)
  116. Admin  : administrative address for comments or reporting problems
  117. Organ  : organization operating site and location in country
  118. Server : email server address and instructions if available
  119. System : type of server (hardware and Operating System if known)
  120. URL    : Universal Resource Locator, to be used with a World Wide Web browser
  121. Comment: any general comments or restrictions
  122. Files  : types of files, archives, or mirrors available

  124. If, for some reason(s), you can't use the sitename (also called cname)
  125. but need the so called IP address, here's how to get it:

  127. Easiest for most people, assuming they're not in a hurry, is to

  140. For more information send the single word 'help' to the same address.
  141. If you're able to use the 'nslookup' command on your system you can
  142. find out interactively. On a Unix system try 'man nslookup' for help
  143. on using nslookup. Another way is to use 'telnet <sitename>', normally
  144. that shows the IP address of the site as well.
  145.  
  146. Unless otherwise stated, all sites take 'anonymous' for the username
  147. and your e-mail address for the password. A side remark on this
  148. one: I only check for username 'anonymous', it's not called Anonymous
  149. FTP for nothing. But if you find a site that does accept 'ftp', guest'
  150. or something like that (with an e-mail address for the password) and
  151. not 'anonymous', let me know and I'll add it to the list. Most sites
  152. accept username 'ftp' as well. Another note on my checking of sites:
  153. if I had a problem connecting to a site, you will find a remark about
  154. that in the Comment: line; Problem: symptom of problem. This does
  155. not mean that that site is no longer operational, just that it wasn't
  156. reachable for me at that moment.
  157.  
  158. Dates are represented in the Day-Month-Year format.

  160. Some of the more common abbreviations used in this list are:

  168. Times are expressed in GMT + or - several hours, e.g. +1 means GMT+1,
  169. -5 means GMT-5. I don't want to use daylight savings or something
  170. like summertime or whatever because it complicates matters. I'm going

  193. Please remember to use sites during off-peak (1800-0600 or 6pm-6am
  194. local time) hours and within your area, before jumping to international
  195. archives. If they have regional access or limited links, respect their
  196. restrictions.
  197. And remember that mirrors are here for a reason. It's often much faster
  198. to check if the file(s) you're looking for are mirrored close by and
  199. getting them there, than getting them from somewhere distant (and slow).
  200.  
  201. Most important of all:
  202. Anonymous FTP access is a privilege and can be denied at any time.
  203. Don't ruin it for yourself and lots of others by overusing a site
  204. or not abiding by their rules.
  205.  
  206. If you notice any changes to a site, please let me know. Site admins
  207. should read my FAQ for the specific information I need. Note: this
  208. release has some sites that haven't been checked yet, or have been
  209. checked but I was unable to fill in all the information. This is not
  210. standard procedure, but a temporary thing (my backlogs were starting
  211. to grow a bit too big).

  213. A comment on Archie: Use this service! For those that don't know what
  214. Archie is, please read my FAQ. Also, services like gopher or WWW can
  215. be much easier to use than 'bare bones' FTP. Try them.
